The Crown Formula
For a centered room fixture (no table), recommended diameter in inches equals the room's length plus width in feet:
D = L + W
- D is the recommended chandelier diameter, in inches.
- L and W are the room's length and width, in feet.
A 12 × 14 ft room suggests 26 inches. A 14 × 18 ft room suggests 32 inches. Use the calculator above for your room.
Over a dining table
Over a dining table the formula changes — scale to the table, not the room. The fixture should be ½ to ⅔ the width of the table. A 42-inch round table suggests a 21–28 inch fixture; a 96-inch rectangular table suggests 48–64 inches.
The bottom of the fixture should hang 30–36 inches above the tabletop.
Ceiling height
As a rough rule, aim for 2.5 to 3 inches of fixture height per foot of ceiling height. A 9-foot ceiling suggests a fixture roughly 22–27 inches tall (excluding chain or rod); a 12-foot ceiling suggests 30–36 inches.
For multi-story foyers and stairwells, measure from the floor of the lowest level the fixture is meant to be seen from, not the ceiling.
Walkway clearance
For any traffic path under the fixture — entry foyers, halls, the side of a kitchen island — keep the bottom of the fixture at least 7 feet off the floor. If you have a guest near 6'4", give yourself 7'6".
Visual weight
The formula gives diameter; it doesn't account for visual mass. Use judgement:
- Airy and minimal — bare bulb cluster, fine wire frame, single tier — can go slightly larger than formula.
- Dense, dark, or heavily faceted pieces should stay at formula size or slightly smaller so they don't overwhelm the room.
Will this fit?
Every product page lists diameter, height, and weight. Compare those numbers to the formula for your room. If you're between two sizes, go up — undersized chandeliers are the most common installation regret.
If you'd like a second opinion, send your room dimensions and a photo to sales@crownchandelier.com. We'll narrow the catalog for you in a day.
